Five Reasons Why Leadership is F.L.A.W.E.D.

It really is never talked about. It is not a common read in social media. But it happens. It is an issue in organizations, not only here in Maryland, Northern Virginia and D.C., but across the United States.  Let’s call it leadership turnover. Now there are a number of reasons why leadership fails at the task at hand and leaves an organization; but when it does it can often create problems with employee motivation, productivity, and job satisfaction. The pressures within leadership, especially in these times of slow growth, can cause disarray across the board. It is then that the leader becomes the weakest link.

Failure is a tough word to take. And when leaders fail, it makes the headlines. Not so much across the national news, it makes the headlines at the dinner table and at the coffee maker. It impacts locally a lot faster than it does globally. The impact within both the culture and climate is long lasting.

Now why do leaders fail? Could it be that they are F.L.A.W.E.D.?

  • F: Failed and defective processes can create inaction, lack of progress, and missed opportunities. In baseball, they indeed fire the manager and not the team.
  • L: Lack of sincerity can also challenge leadership. If leadership is not trusted it will never succeed.
  • A: Arrogance and the lack of adaptiveness can be the beginning of the end for managers who push a harsh agenda.
  • W: Most leaders who move on are very well educated; it is their business sense that posed the biggest challenge.
  • E: Economic situations sometimes will hamper even the best intentioned leader. Profitability is the indicator to prosperity.
  • D: Decision-making quality or the very lack of it will often send a leader packing. Many managers confuse decision-making with problem solving, which are two completely different and definable courses of action. The lack of participatory action with the team will often seal the end.

Leadership has to be a success catalyst for everyone in the organization. Values, vision, and engagement will always help leadership as it grows in purpose. The task of change is always a challenging one.  In How to Win Friends and Influence People, Mr. Carnegie suggests asking questions and not giving orders will create success in relationships. Leaders who praise others, are involved, and encourage everyone around them will be around a long time. A leader’s job security always depends on the success of others.
