Making a Difference

Making a difference is not always about making grand gestures.  It can be as simple as a random act of kindness, or taking a minute to consider someone else.  Not only do we help others, but we feel better about ourselves when we are making a difference in the world.  Contrary to popular belief, showing kindness and making that difference is not complicated, and does not require heroic efforts.  No matter how big or small, you have the power to make a difference.

In Loren Eiseley’s story “The Star Thrower,” a man shows kindness to starfish by throwing them back into the water at low tide.  Although simple, he saved their lives and provided them with the necessary oxygen to survive.  Without his kindness, they would have suffered a much more tragic fate.  Even though the man was just doing something he felt was right, he made a difference.  At the end of the story, “The man bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and threw it back into the ocean. With a smile he replied, ‘Made a difference to that one!’”  It only takes one.  He showed kindness, no matter how insignificant it may have appeared.

It is easy to make a difference in everyday life; it doesn’t take any special situation or circumstance.  Whether it’s opening the door for your colleagues, paying for someone’s meal, or starting a charity event, you are making a difference.  Take this knowledge into the world and make it a better place!

“Just remember, no matter how small the deed

it really does makes a difference.”
